Newcastle United and AC Milan have reached an agreement over the Italian midfielder’s move to England.

To make the transfer a reality, the Magpies sent their sports director Dan Ashworth and top scout Steve Nickson to Italy on Tuesday. They are now returning home from Milan with a completed transfer.

After Newcastle made their first offer over the weekend, Tonali was open to transferring to St James’ Park; he has since decided to sign a six-year contract after spending three years at San Siro. Before signing his contract, Tonali will undergo a physical check-up in Romania, where Italy will be for the European Under-21 Championships.

Tonali is set to become Newcastle’s second most expensive signing in club history after last year’s purchase of Swedish attacker Alexander Isak. The deal totals around €70m (£60m) with add-ons. Tonali will be Newcastle’s first important summer signing as they look to add four more players to boss Eddie Howe’s roster.

Newcastle reportedly also wants to add a new right-sided central defender, a fullback, a wide attacker, and a number 10 to the Tonali deal. They are hopeful that James Maddison, who is also sought after by Tottenham, will agree to a move up north.
