Heung-Min Son expressed regret that Tottenham’s head coach Antonio Conte had left the team and said he felt accountable for the Italian’s departure since he was unable to match his outstanding performance from the previous season.
The 30-year-old South Korean front completed last season as the league’s joint-top scorer with 23 goals, helping Spurs finish fourth under Conte, but the forward has only netted six goals in the league thus far.
Eight days after calling his players “selfish” during a 3-3 tie at Southampton, Tottenham fired Conte on Sunday.
“I feel responsible as a player for his situation,” Son stated after South Korea’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Uruguay in Seoul on Tuesday. “He’s a world-class coach, and we had a tremendous time at Tottenham together.
I ought to have performed better. I feel guilty about his departure since I haven’t done anything to support him or the club.”
Tottenham has been disqualified from both the domestic cup tournaments and the Champions League. With 49 points from 28 games, they stand fourth in the Premier League. They play again this upcoming Monday against Everton.
