AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho has been given a 10-day suspension due to the remarks he made towards referee Daniele Chiffi.
Following a game against Monza on May 3, Mourinho, 60, claimed Chiffi was “the worst referee I have ever encountered in my life.” Additionally, the fiery Portuguese manager was given a 50,000 euro (£43,000) fine. According to the Italian FA, Mourinho will be suspended for 10 days beginning on the first day of the following relevant championship.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Manchester United manager blasted Chiffi for dismissing Roma’s Mehmet Zeki Celik in the last minute of regular play time in a 1-1 Serie A tie at U-Power Stadium.
Mourinho admitted he was wearing a microphone to “guard” himself after receiving a yellow card in the game. Last year was a difficult one for Mourinho on the sidelines; he was shown three red cards for altercations with referees, including one from Chiffi in the team’s defeat to Atalanta in September.
Roma lost to Sevilla on penalties to finish second in the Europa League and sixth in Serie A.
The weekend of August 19–20 will mark the start of the new Serie A campaign.
