Bruno Fernandes will serve as the new club captain for the 2023–24 season, Manchester United has announced.
Harry Maguire, who made just eight Premier League appearances last season after sliding down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order, recently lost his captaincy, and Fernandes has taken his position. Last year, the Portuguese international captained the Red Devils regularly, notably in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals.
The Portuguese midfielder has previously led United on multiple occasions, and Erik ten Hag has now officially announced that he will continue to do so.
“Since joining the team in 2020, Fernando has played 185 games and has produced 54 assists for a total of 64 goals and 64 goals. The two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, who serves as United’s captain, will continue to set the highest standards for the team as United strives for victory in the 2023–24 season and beyond.”
Fernandes held the armband for most of the 2022–23 season while Maguire was an unpopular choice and was an easy option for the position. In his debut game as the club’s official captain, Fernandes will lead the team against Arsenal on July 22 in New Jersey.
After being designated captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the 2020 season, Maguire announced earlier in July that manager Erik ten Hag had decided to remove him from that position.
