Barcelona is optimistic that they will complete their signing of Joao Cancelo this week.
The 29-year-old is no longer needed at the Etihad Stadium after Pep Guardiola made it clear that Cancelo isn’t in his plans for the future last season. Bayern Munich, where Cancelo spent the second part of last season on loan, chose not to exercise their option to bring him on board permanently.
After productive discussions over the weekend, Barcelona is now nearing an agreement to sign Cancelo on a season-long loan.
According to rumours, Barcelona has agreed to a £30 million option to make the transfer permanent next summer, and they will pay the majority of Cancelo’s salary throughout the length of the current campaign.
Cancelo received attention from Saudi Arabian and European big-name clubs, including Arsenal, but the option of playing for Barcelona’s first team under Xavi was always the player’s top preference.
Due to ongoing negotiations over a loan agreement with Atletico Madrid, the Man City fullback may potentially have the opportunity to team up with fellow Portugal international Joao Felix.
