Matheus Nunes, a midfielder who plays for Wolves, will be punished for skipping training due to protesting to join Manchester City.
The 25-year-old international from Portugal had a £47 million approach from Premier League leaders City rejected last week.
Nunes, who has made it plain that he wants to play for Pep Guardiola’s team, is reportedly worth more than £60 million to Wolves. The Midlands club paid Sporting Lisbon a club-record £38 million to recruit the player to a five-year contract last summer.
Wolves expect a better offer before Friday night’s transfer deadline, though. Gary O’Neil, the team’s manager, did not permit Nunes to miss training on Sunday or Monday.
Nunes played a significant role in the Wolves’ successful avoidance of relegation and 13th-place finish in the standings during the second half of the season.
