Harry Maguire, a central defender for Manchester United, has admitted that the inability to reach “an agreement” with the Red Devils caused the proposed transfer to West Ham United this summer to fall through.
Maguire was to be signed by West Ham for £30 million by United back in August, but a deal never came through. According to sources, the defender sought a pay-off that reflected the pay cut he would have to accept to transfer to the London Stadium.
Maguire revealed that conversations with United did not produce the desired outcome while speaking to the media for the first time about the failed transfer.
“How should I say this?”, Maguire said. In his talks with United, he claimed, “We just couldn’t reach an understanding. They were glad to have me stay at the club, and I was happy to stand up for myself. Every time I train or play, I will give it my all because I want to accomplish that.”
Maguire has not yet made a start for United this season; his lone appearance came in a 23-minute cameo during a 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium just before the international break.
Maguire, though, is optimistic that his playing time will rise in the upcoming weeks as the Red Devils kick off their domestic cup and Champions League campaigns.
