Chelsea and Brighton have reached an agreement to pay a record £115 million for midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo becomes Chelsea’s 8th summer acquisition so far.
On Friday, rival club Liverpool and the 21-year-old Ecuadorian star reached a £111 million agreement. However, Caicedo prefers Chelsea, and this summer, after having a string of bids turned down by Brighton, they have finally succeeded with one.
Chelsea will shatter the British record again in 2023 thanks to the sum agreed, following the £107 million the club spent in January for Argentine winger Enzo Fernandez.
Brighton has also secured a sell-on option for Caicedo. It is believed that the first cost will be £100 million, with half of the additional payments likely to be easily attainable.
This summer, Brighton set a price for Caicedo that was above £100 million and claimed they didn’t think anybody would match it. Chelsea allegedly made a prior proposal of £80 million.
Caicedo was acquired by Brighton for £4 million from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in February 2021, although his Premier League debut did not come until April 2022.
He opted to leave Brighton during the January transfer window earlier this year, and Arsenal made several bids for the midfielder until he agreed to a new deal that would keep him at the club through 2027 in March.
