David Datro Fofana has transferred from Chelsea to Union Berlin on loan for the 23/24 season, in hopes of playing Champions League football.
Fofana will get the opportunity to participate in larger competitions, after Union Berlin stormed the Bundesliga last season with an amazing performance and managed a fourth-place finish, just behind RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
Fofana would not have been able to participate in European football of any kind if he had remained at Stamford Bridge for the upcoming season, following the Blues placing in their lowest Premier League spot since 1994. Fofana joined Chelsea during the January transfer window, and he made only three Premier League appearances for the Blues. If he were to remain at the club, he’d face even more competition from new arrivals Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson.
“Union have developed strongly in the last few years and it excites me a lot to be a part of this in the coming season. The club has made a long and hard effort to acquire me and now I want to repay that with good performances,” Fofana said regarding his transfer to Germany.
