Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilon is on the verge of joining Manchester United temporarily.
In search of a new left defender to provide short-term help in the lineup after long-term injuries to both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, United has now turned its focus to the Spaniard after earlier this week eyeing Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.
Diogo Dalot was used as the left defender for United’s match against Nottingham Forest last weekend since the team lacks an experienced and healthy senior left back. Cucurella was the subject of ongoing negotiations, but Chelsea’s demand for a substantial loan fee forced United to consider their other options. Reguilon is being offered by United on a season-long loan arrangement, although it’s believed both United and Spurs have a break clause in January.
Cucurella was the position’s primary target, but Reguilon offers United a cost-effective option and does have a lot of top-level experience at other teams. Reguilon’s lower price tag also gives United more negotiating power when trying to reach an agreement on a deal for Sofyan Amrabat, and it is anticipated that both players’ contracts will be signed before the transfer deadline on Friday at 11 p.m.
To complete the move, Reguilon has been permitted to travel to Manchester for a medical checkup. Reguilon made 12 appearances last season while on loan at Atletico Madrid but is not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans for Tottenham.
