Former champion Jelena Ostapenko was shockingly defeated by Peyton Stearns in the second round of the French Open.
Latvian Ostapenko, who is the 2017 Roland Garros champion, was defeated 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 by American Stearns.
As the second round of the French Open began on Wednesday, she was eliminated, becoming the 15th women’s seed to do so. After making her big debut at the US Open in 2017, Stearns, 21, is participating in her first Grand Slam tournament outside of the United States.
She won her first Grand Slam match against doubles ace Katerina Siniakova in the opening round.
In the third round, she will go up against either Czech Marketa Vondrousova or ninth-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina.
