Karolina Muchova’s tennis career was predicted to have ended last year due to several serious injuries.
However, she has bounced back this year by securing her spot in the Grand Slam final at the French Open 2023. The worst times in life, however, pave the way for the greatest highs, and in this case, her first Grand Slam.
Muchova had to struggle on the court to defeat world number two Aryna Sabalenka, just as she had to battle back from back, abdominal, and ankle injuries.
Muchova prevailed in a 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 thriller which lasted more than three hours.
Before Roland Garros, Muchova, who was ranked 43rd in the world, had only advanced to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam once, at the Australian Open in 2021.
She will next face Swiatek, the reigning champion and a player who is expected to begin her 64th week at the top of the rankings, although Muchova’s numbers show well considering she defeated the Pole in their only former match in Prague in 2019.
Muchova has also triumphed in her past five matches against players who are rated first, second, or third in the world rankings.
