Paddington’s victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes gave trainer Aidan O’Brien a Royal Ascot record 83 victories.
Amongst other guests were King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who attended their first Royal Ascot under their new titles and royal roles after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II last September.
Ryan Moore’s Irish 2,000 Guineas champion defeated Chaldean, Frankie Dettori’s English Guineas champion. Bradsell won the King’s Stand Stakes, and Hollie Doyle made history by riding a top-level Group One winner at Royal Ascot.
Dettori, who is competing at his last Royal Ascot before retiring from racing, was overshadowed by Moore, who won on River Tiber.
Under Neil Callan, Triple Time, a horse trained by Kevin Ryan, surprised everyone by winning the inaugural Queen Anne Stakes at a 33-1 shot. On a discouraging day for 52-year-old Italian Dettori, Inspiral came in second a close second.
In her final race, the pregnant mare “Ahorsewithnoname” (7-1) won the Ascot Stakes. William Buick led “Ahorsewithnoname” to victory in her final race under Nicky Henderson’s direction. The eight-year-old, a Cracksman foal, arrived home in front of Calling The Wind.
Jack Mitchell’s first victory at Royal Ascot came aboard the Roger Varian-trained horse Royal Champion. In the main event on the first day, Chaldean was the 7-4 favourite, but Paddington, the 11-5 long shot, won by three and three-quarter lengths.
