Elena Rybakina, the defending Wimbledon champion, advanced to the third round with a gruelling triumph against an injured Alize Cornet.
Rybakina of Kazakhstan won the first set, but France’s Cornet, who had previously injured her right leg, struggled in the second set. After receiving treatment, Cornet persisted, but in the end, Rybakina prevailed 6-2 7-6 (7-2). The next opponent for Rybakina will be Katie Boulter of Great Britain.
Despite being hindered by an eye issue in the second set, Elina Svitolina defeated 28th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-1 1-6 6-1 to go to the third round.
Fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula defeated Spaniard Cristina Bucsa with ease, 6-1, 6-4, while fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia overcame adversity to defeat Canadian Leylah Fernandez with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-6).
Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina also triumphed despite having to wait an additional two days to face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain in the opening round due to weather delays at the All England Club. The final score of 6-4 6-3 made Kalinina’s patience worthwhile.
Karolina Muchova, the 16th seed from the Czech Republic, was defeated in the first round by Jule Niemeier, the 87-place lower-ranked German, after suffering a leg injury in the final set.
There were comeback wins for Swiss 14th seed Belinda Bencic, who defeated American Danielle Collins 3-6 6-4 7-6 (10-2) and Croatian 20th seed Donna Vekic, who overcame American Sloane Stephens 6-4 7-5 6-4 after falling down a set and 5-2.
Anett Kontaveit, the former world No. 2, lost her last singles match in a heartbreaking 6-1, 6-2 loss to Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in the second round. However, before she turns 27 and retires, Kontaveit will compete in mixed doubles partnering Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland.
With a 6-3 6-0 victory against Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska, two-time major champion Victoria Azarenka moved through to the third round.
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu defeated Anna Bondar 6-3 3-6 6-2 in her postponed first-round match.
