In his first singles match in the United States in two years, Novak Djokovic won with ease at the Cincinnati Open.
23-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic had previously been prevented from competing in the US by Covid regulations. However, restrictions for unvaccinated foreign visitors were loosened in May, allowing him to resume competing.
Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who eventually quit due to a back injury, was defeated by him in the opening set, 6-4.
The 36-year-old Serb’s triumph was his first Cincinnati singles match since 2019, but he and compatriot Nikola Cacic fell in doubles on Tuesday to Britain’s Jamie Murray and New Zealand’s Michael Venus.
