With a victory against Karolina Muchova in the Cincinnati Open final in straight sets, American youth Coco Gauff won the greatest championship of her career.
Gauff defeated her Czech opponent 6-3 6-4 in the final on Sunday after shockingly defeating first seed Iga Swiatek in the semifinal.
After victories in Washington, DC, and Auckland, this is the 19-year-old’s third victory of 2023 and her fifth career championship overall. Since Bianca Andreescu in 2019, the American also became the first teenager to win three WTA titles in a calendar year.
А 7th seed Gauff, who was playing in her first WTA 1000 final, calmly served out the opening set to love after breaking her opponent, who she was facing for the first time, three times in the first set.
Muchova, who is expected to break into the top 10 for the first time, battled with consistency, and Gauff took the lead in the second set’s fifth game after missing a backhand. The American lost three match points when serving at 5-2, but she made up for it in the following service game to win.
Gauff reflected on her difficulties earlier this season, which included a first-round elimination at Wimbledon, and said, “This is fantastic, especially considering everything I went through in Europe during the summer.”
