Ahead of facing number one Novak Djokovic in the Italian Open’s round of 16, British number one Cameron Norrie defeated Marton Fucsovics.
In a match that was extended due to rain delays in Rome on Saturday, Norrie triumphed 6-2 7-6 (7-4). After taking a set and 5-1 lead, Norrie was challenged by the Hungarian but came back strong to win.
Against his 92nd-ranked opponent, Norrie displayed strength right away. He broke to take an early 3-1 lead and continued that success by breaking again in the ninth game.
Fucsovics worked on his serve as the game went on, and Norrie twice took advantage to go up 5-1 and within striking distance of the win.
The Hungarian produced a brief comeback, twice breaking Norrie when he served for the match, and saved five match chances, including four on his serve, to tie the match at 5-5. Suddenly, the British number one began to struggle.
Norrie maintained his composure to lead 6-5, but his opponent tied the score once again to force a tie-break.
